The government started the No Child Left Behind initiative mainly to increase academic accomplishment among the country’s underprivileged students, and to assist middle to upper class students perform better than they have in recent years.

However, what is not broadly understood is that in order to accomplish this goal, 71% of our nation’s districts are narrowing the curriculum in elementary schools to focus primarily on those subject areas that are tested, such as reading, writing and math, to receive higher scores on state tests. The result is that much less time is spent in areas such as Science or Social Studies as those subjects are not as heavily tested.

While I applaud the intent of No Child Left Behind, I am concerned with the implications that the resulting focus on tested subjects will have on today’s students as they become tomorrow’s adults. 

For example, the role of Social Studies is to educate students in history, geography, civics and economics. These areas of study create a map to help us understand the impact of legislative decisions and moral lessons over the years. While History may appear to be a subject about the past, if a teacher is able to connect history to the present students will better understand the world around them and how they can have an impact, which will ultimately result in future responsible, active citizens of our country, cities and communities.

Imagine the adults of tomorrow having no understanding or appreciation for the struggles of the men and women who founded this nation. Would they appreciate the country we live in? Would the freedoms we enjoy as an American even matter to them? Would they actively engage in improving the U.S. through informed votes on election days or becoming active community members empowered to do what’s right? Without essential Social Studies content in our public schools, I worry about a future citizenry that does not have the background knowledge essential for making good choices for themselves and their communities.

What about Science? Imagine growing up without a formal understanding of scientific thinking or how the world of nature works. Lacking this, most people will never experience the admiration and reference for nature. What impact will this have on how they live their lives if they don’t see the consequences of their actions on the natural world? Our actions make a difference!

Wonder and awe lead to respect for nature, differences and for the miracle of life. It would be a real shame if our students didn’t learn about the marvels of science when they are young and open to suggestions! Yes, science is required in middle and high school, but much of the wonder and awe of the natural world is planted at a much younger age.

It is in elementary school where science can be taught in a way that includes stories and imagination, through demonstrations that inspire a respect for nature, unlike the more conceptual approaches required in high school. It would be a great disappointment if our elementary school children miss this all important opportunity solely in order to focus on reading, writing and math.

And yet, the aim of the No Child Left Behind concept is good.My suggestion is that the elementary schools integrate reading, writing and math into a whole curriculum. In addition to teaching the fundamentals of these subjects, they can then be integrated into rich content units in Social Studies and Science to provide meaningful applications of these fundamental skills.

A global approach such as this addresses both the need to ensure that students learn to read, write and do math, along with providing the essential background knowledge afforded by Social Studies and Science content.

Of course, it takes great teachers to accomplish this task. But the payoff is worth it.An integrated teaching method will teach our children to think independently, empathize with other people, and learn to contribute to the improvement of our world.What better gift to give to the adults of tomorrow! 

The uttering of the baby is what is called babbling, baby talk or twaddling. It looks as though that the babies make these sounds so as to prepare themselves to utter the sounds used for acquiring the language. However, they are not able to utter words that can be recognized. In the first year the larynx descends which allows the pharynx to develop to utter all the sounds that would be required to make up the speech. The baby begins to make noise when 5 to 7 months old. It is only when the infant is a year old that this baby talk transforms to recognizable words. Syllables are repeated by the baby. This is called reduplicative babbling. The baby begins to babble with a mix of syllables. This is called variegated babbling. Children usually babble much more when calm as compared to when they are excited or upset. The babies prepare themselves to speak the language with the basic sounds. Babbling is an innate response of babies as can be deduced by the fact that the deaf babies too.

From birth to 4 months the baby coos and gurgles. When the baby is 4 to 6 months old, it begins to babble. Babies enjoy babbling until they are about a year old or so. The toddler starts imitating sounds as well as words making their babbling meaningful when they are between 12-18 months. At the age of 12 and 18 months the toddlers start to repeat words. Meaningful words start emerging from the babbling. There are some 50 words or so that they can handle. They, of course, understand many more. They start forming short sentences. But they use familiar words wrongly. The baby progresses from crying and then moves on to cooing which becomes vocal play. Canonical babbling follows and then moves on to conversational babbling.

Sign language is also used by babies as a means for effective communication. Babies can be taught sign language to assist them to avoid being frustrated when they are not able to find the right sound to express themselves. Priscilla Dunstan proclaimed that babies everywhere is found to use a set of five words and that each have a specific meaning. She released  The Dunstan Baby Language DVD in 2006 which sets out to teach the method to recognize these sounds.

Babbling of babies, when responded to with babbling by adults is beneficial to the development of babies. Integrating this with some normal adult speech will assist the baby in the development of vocabulary. It assists in the cognitive development of the baby. Eventually the baby will achieve the ability to normally speak the local language no mater what.
